June 24, 2006 - Day 18Location: Circle, AK Today was an easy day. Just 42 miles up to Circle. The plan is to take the latter half of the day to do errands, send pictures and prepare for the “Yukon Flats.” Circle marks the beginning of the dreaded 250 mile section of the river which I think can be accurately compared to the Florida Everglades. The river divides into many branches and I’ll need to start alert the entire way for the “correct” channel to take. Choosing the “wrong” channel could lead to a dead end, a log pile or a slough (pronounced “slew”) that will take me many miles out of the way. It is NOT fun. I’ll have the GPS plugged into the laptop to display my real-time progress and guide me through the maze of channels. I just hope it doesn’t rain so I can keep the laptop nearby. If all goes well my next stop with be Tanana, some 420 miles downriver. Wish me luck!
